Hillsborough

Overview of Hillsborough
Hillsborough is roughly 17 to 18 miles south of San Francisco. It is bounded by Burlingame and San Mateo to the east, Highlands-Baywood Park to the south, and Interstate 280 to the west.
Considered to be one of the richest towns in America, Hillsborough traces its history back to 1846, when the son of a wealthy shipping magnate purchased the land and settled in the area.
Hillsborough’s affluence and history is evident in the mansions and historic homes scattered throughout town. These include the Sidney Bazett Residence, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Carolands, which is considered to be one of America’s largest mansions.
Estates aside, Hillsborough is also home to some of California’s best schools. THe town is served by Hillsborough City School District, which has the distinction of being one of the top 10 school districts in the entire U.S.
Highlights of the locale
- The Carolands Chateau – One of the largest mansions in America, the Carolands was designed to be the crowning jewel of the 500-acre Carolan estate. Featuring a mix of Beaux Arts and American Renaissance, Carolands is registered in the National Register of Historic Places. It is open for tours.
- Crystal Springs Regional Trail – Located just outside Hillsborough, this regional trail is open for hiking, cycling, and running. As of date, 15.3 miles of the planned 17.5 miles has been finished and is open to the public.
